Here are some common questions I get asked regularly about waxing:

Preparation & Hair Length
Q: How long does my hair need to be for waxing?
A: For the wax to grip properly and give you the best results, your hair should be at least 1/4 inch (about 6mm) long. This usually means not shaving or trimming the area for at least 2-3 weeks before your appointment. Too long is better than too short.
Q: How should I prepare my skin before my appointment?
A: Please come with clean, dry skin. Shower beforehand, but avoid applying any heavy oils, lotions, or creams to the area you are having waxed, as this can prevent the wax from adhering to the hair. Full pre care instructions are emailed across to you when you make an appointment.
Q: Should I take a pain reliever before my wax?
A: Personally I don't think it makes any difference, however, some clients find that taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like Ibuprofen 30-45 minutes before their appointment can help reduce discomfort. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, as they can increase skin sensitivity.
Avoid Before Your Appointment | Do Before Your Appointment |
Shaving/Trimming | Shower and cleanse the area |
Heavy lotions or oils | Let hair grow to at least a quarter of an inch |
Tanning or excessive sun exposure | Follow the pre care advise provided |
During Your Appointment
Q: Does waxing hurt?
A: I am always honest: waxing is not entirely painless, especially for first timers. However, the discomfort is very brief, lasting only a second or two as the wax is removed. The good news is that with regular waxing, it hurts less each time because the hair grows back finer, sparser, and the root is weaker.
Q: Can I get an intimate wax (e.g. Brazilian) while I’m on my period?
A: Yes, you absolutely can! You will simply need to wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup/disc during the service for hygiene purposes. Please be aware that you may experience heightened sensitivity around this time due to hormonal changes.
Q: Can I get waxed if I am pregnant?
A: Yes, waxing is generally safe during pregnancy except for during the first trimester. However, due to increased blood flow and hormones, your skin may be more sensitive and prone to swelling. I am happy to adjust your position to ensure you are comfortable. I always recommend you consult with your doctor if you have any concerns.
Q: What is the difference between hard (hot) wax and strip wax?
A: Hard (Hot) Wax (Strip-less): Applied thickly and removed once it hardens, without a strip. It is ideal for sensitive, delicate areas like the bikini, underarms, and face because it shrink wraps around the hair and only adheres to the hair, not the skin.
Strip Wax (Soft Wax): Applied in a thin layer and removed with a paper or cloth strip. It is best used for larger, less sensitive areas like the legs, back and arms.
Aftercare & Maintenance
Q: What kind of reactions are normal after waxing?
A: It is completely normal to have some redness, slight swelling, and small red bumps (histamine reaction) immediately after the service. This is especially common after a first wax and should subside within 24-72 hours.
Q: What should I avoid after my wax? (The first 24-48 hours)
A: To prevent irritation, breakouts, and ingrown hairs, please avoid:
Heat: Hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and sun exposure/tanning beds.
Friction: Tight clothing and vigorous exercise/swimming.
Bacteria: Touching or scratching the waxed area with unwashed hands and sexual activity after an intimate wax.
Full aftercare instructions are sent to you after your waxing appointment, please follow this advise.
Q: How often should I get waxed?
A: I recommend coming in every 4 to 6 weeks. Sticking to this schedule is crucial! It allows your hair to get onto the same growth cycle, leading to cleaner removal, less pain, and eventually, thinner, sparser regrowth. Consistency is key even if it looks like not a lot of hair has grown back, stick to the schedule and you will see the results.
Q: Will my hair grow back thicker after waxing?
A: No, it will not! This is a common myth. Because waxing removes the hair from the root, the new hair that grows back has a fine, soft tip. Over time, and with consistent waxing, most clients find their hair grows back thinner, lighter, and much slower.
Q: How can I prevent ingrown hairs?
A: The best defense is a gentle regular routine:
Exfoliate the area 2-3 times a week, starting 48 hours after your wax.
Moisturise the area daily to keep the skin supple and help new hair break through.
Use a professional ingrown hair serum specifically designed to treat and prevent bumps.
I sell waxing aftercare products which are specifically designed for use after waxing and in between appointments, an absolute must for waxing.
I hope this helps answer some of the most common questions I get asked regarding waxing.
