Common Waxing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Waxing is a popular method for achieving smooth, hair free skin, many people experience less than ideal results because of common mistakes that can easily be avoided with a bit of knowledge and preparation. Here, I will uncover some frequent waxing mistakes and provide tips on how to achieve the best results, ensuring your waxing experience is as smooth as your skin will be.

Not preparing the skin properly before your waxing appointment is a common mistake. Skin should be clean and dry, free from oils and lotions that can create a barrier, preventing the wax from adhering properly to the hair. Exfoliating the area a day or two before waxing can also help remove dead skin cells and reduce the risk of ingrown hairs. However, avoid exfoliating immediately before waxing as this can make the skin more sensitive. Ensuring your hair is the right length is also crucial, hair should be about a quarter to half an inch long for the wax to grip effectively. If it’s too short, the wax may not be able to catch the hair, while hair that is too long can cause more pain and breakage.

Waxing

Another common mistake when carrying out DIY waxing at home is not paying attention to the direction of hair growth. Wax should be applied in the direction of the hair growth and removed against it. This technique ensures that the hair is pulled out from the root rather than breaking at the surface, which can lead to quicker regrowth and potential ingrown hairs. Additionally, when removing the wax strip, it’s important to pull it back quickly and close to the skin rather than pulling upward. This can help reduce pain and skin irritation. To achieve better, smoother longer lasting results you should always leave waxing to the professionals and book an appointment with a waxing specialist, like myself.

Lastly, neglecting aftercare can lead to discomfort and skin issues. Avoid tight clothing, hot showers, and heavy exercise for at least 24 hours post waxing to prevent irritation and infection. Moisturising the area regularly can help keep the skin soft and reduce the risk of ingrown hairs, while avoiding sun exposure can prevent hyperpigmentation on freshly waxed skin. By following these guidelines and avoiding common waxing mistakes, you can enjoy smoother, longer lasting results with minimal discomfort. Book your waxing appointment today with me in Pinner.
