How to Prepare Your Skin for Waxing

Pre waxing skin care is crucial to ensure a smooth and effective waxing experience while minimising discomfort and potential skin issues.

One of the most important steps in pre waxing care is exfoliation. By gently exfoliating the skin a day or two before your appointment, you remove dead skin cells that can block hair follicles and cause ingrown hairs. Exfoliation helps to lift the hairs, making them easier to remove from the root and resulting in a cleaner wax. It's essential to use a mild exfoliant to avoid irritating the skin, as harsh scrubs can cause micro tears and increase sensitivity.

Hydration is another vital component of pre waxing skin care. Well hydrated skin is more pliable and resilient, which can help reduce the pain associated with waxing. In the days leading up to your appointment, make sure to drink plenty of water and use a good moisturiser to keep your skin supple. However, on the day of your waxing session, it's best to avoid applying any heavy creams or oils, as they can create a barrier that makes it difficult for the wax to adhere to the hairs properly.

There are certain products and activities you should avoid before waxing. Steer clear of retinoids, glycolic acids, and other strong chemical exfoliants for at least a week prior to your appointment, as these can make your skin more sensitive and prone to irritation. Similarly, avoid sunbathing, tanning beds, and saunas right before waxing, as these can make your skin more tender and susceptible to damage.

To ensure you have a successful waxing experience with me in Pinner, before your waxing appointment, you should:

  • Stop using retinol at least 8 days before your treatment

  • Grow your hair out to at least a 1/4 inch (the length of a grain of rice), this can take anything from 3 - 6 weeks of hair growth

  • Exfoliate your skin a few days before your waxing appointment (body)

  • Wear loose fitting clothing to your appointment for body waxing

  • Skin must be free of any products e.g. moisturisers, creams, makeup, fake tans

  • Avoid sauna's, steam rooms and sunbeds for 24 hours before your appointment

  • Avoid caffeine for 24 hours before your appointment

  • If possible shower before your appointment
